It’s an 80’s fanboys dream cast but not quite the film they’d be hoping for. All those with memories of Rambo and Predator will be thrilled by the mental finale but the first two thirds of this film fall flat. The attempt to garner a larger audience has meant the film has been censored to a 15 certificate therefore neutering the unadulterated madness we all came to see. Indeed, the cast do everything required of them – say their lines and beat the shit out of bad guys. Lundgren earns a lot of credit for his brilliant dead pan madness and Roberts does well as the stereotypical agent-gone-bad.
However, it is hilarious how gun size/usage acting used as the method of character development. Obviously you do not watch The Expendables for subtle nuances but the all balls and no brains approach grates. The movie is buoyed by the sense of enjoyment by all involved clearly enjoying the banal dialogue and clunky direction at times. Statham, Stallone and Li’s chemistry bonds the audience and the leads but it’s just a shame that The Expendables doesn’t go all the away to 11 on the insanity scale.
